The Immeasurable Greatness of God's Power
Ephesians 1:16:-23 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
The most powerful weapons on Earth are nuclear weapons. The most powerful nuclear weapon tested to date is Russia’s Tsar Bomba, a thermonuclear bomb tested by the Russians in 1961. The Tsar Bomba yielded over fifty megatons of TNT explosives. To put that into perspective, one megaton is equal to one million tons of TNT explosives. This bomb is comparable to fifty million tons of TNT explosives. When the Russians detonated this bomb, the shock wave circled the earth three times on both the surface and in the air. The cap of the mushroom cloud rose over forty miles and peaked well into the mesosphere. The base of the mushroom sprawled twenty- five miles in width. That is a lot of power, but man’s best attempt cannot even begin to compare to the infinite power of God.
Paul prays that the Ephesians would know the immeasurable greatness of God's power. God’s power is without limit. We use the word " omnipotent " to describe God’s power. He is all- powerful. God’s power cannot be measured because there is no measurement for the infinite. Just as the first century Christian’s in Paul’s day needed to hear about the great power of God, we need to be reminded of this same truth in our time.
Jeremiah 32:17 ESV: Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
When was the last time that you went out at night and looked up at the stars? The God who
created all that we can see by his infinite power is our God, and we have been adopted by faith in Christ as sons of God. God, the Holy Spirit dwells in every single born-again believer. Here is a paragraph from an article from NASA entitled “Our Milky Way Galaxy, How Big is Space. “Our galaxy is a gravitationally bound collection of stars, swirling in a spiral through space. Based on the deepest images obtained so far, it’s one of about 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. Groups of them are bound into clusters of galaxies, and these into superclusters; the superclusters are arranged in immense sheets stretching across the universe, interspersed with dark voids and lending the whole a kind of spiderweb structure. Our galaxy probably contains 100 to 400 billion stars and is about 100,000 light-years across. That sounds huge, and it is, at least until we start comparing it to other galaxies. Our neighboring Andromeda galaxy, for example, is some 220,000 light-years wide. Another galaxy, IC 1101, spans as much as 4 million light-years.”
To put the infinite power of God in perspective, a light year is the speed at which light travels in one year. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. If you add up all the seconds in one year, multiply them by the speed of light, you get 5.8 trillion miles light travels in one year. Our galaxy is 100,000 light-years across, and there are two trillion observable galaxies. Are you starting to see the immeasurable power of God? How incredible is our God!
One verse that I have been thinking about a lot this year is found in Ephesians chapter three verse twenty.
Ephesians 3:20 ESV: “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,”
